Fishing in Eastern Värmland
The eastern part of Värmland province in Sweden is part giant forest and wild country in the north and a patchwork of rich farming country as you go south. In the north the predominant fish species are pike, perch and salmon trout. In the south you can catch bream, salmon and salmon trout. Expect peace and tranquility in stunning natural surroundings in eastern Värmland. Pike is the big fish in the pond here. These muscle- bound, streamlined hunters predate the lakes of Vänern, Skagern, Ullvettern, Daglösen, Lungen, Malmlången and Djuprämmen. Pike weighing in at 10 kg are not uncommon and the best time to catch them is early morning or late at night. Don’t miss out on the zander in some of these lakes. Weights of 6-7 kg have been recorded. For perch, the most common fish in the region meanwhile, try Vänern, Ullvettern, Daglösen, Möckeln, Skagern, St. Lungen, Lungen and St. Horrsjön. Record fish of around 2 kg have been caught in these lakes from boats, the preferred method in these parts.
The Bergslagenkanal stretches 65 kilometres from Filipstad to Karlskoga in the southern part of the region. Along its way and in its system of canals, lakes and rivers there is plenty of good fishing. Hotel, guesthouse and B&B accommodation can be found in the main towns here, including; Filipstad, Karlskoga, Kristinehamn and Storfors. There are also hostel and campsite accommodation available in these centres. ‘Wilderness’ camps and specialist fishing camps offering fishing packages are also available.
